You only get one chance to make a first impression. Today’s post will help you make sure that it is a lasting one … and in a good way.
Your chances to make a lasting impressing come in two ways.
1) First glance.
There’s a reason love-at-first-sight takes place. We are tuned into visual or non-verbal keys. In networking that happens by being “together”.
Next time you’re ready to attend a mixer or business meeting, give your self the once over. Do you have your networking tools in an accessible spot? Fumbling for your business cards might not make the best impression. Are you present and participating or have you backed off into a corner with the safety of your smart phone? What is your over all appearance — do you look like you would want to do business with you?
2) First voice.
When someone asks you what you do. Can you introduce yourself and your business in less then 60 seconds and keep them engaged while you do it? Delivering a laundry list of services is never good, its just too much to sort through and doesn’t really make you memorable. Find one thing you would like to focus on and its benefit to the listener.
Assignment:
Today’s assignment is a two-parter. Don’t worry they won’t all be like that.
Listen to Dr. Ivan Misner’s podcast where he talks about the best 60 second presentation ever. Its a great example of how to deliver a powerful 60 second that really sets you apart during a business meeting. You can find it at: http://www.bnipodcast.com/2010/11/24/episode-182-the-best-60-second-presentation-i-ever-heard/
Then I’d like you to do a dress rehearsal for your next networking event. This is where you pull out the appropriate clothing, accessories and even test your pens (regular ink and a marker for writing on glossy cards!). Spend some time in the mirror practicing your standing without leaning, reaching in your pocket and telling people what you do. For how long? Until you can say “I make the other person look good when they refer me”.
