Most active Networkers recognize that all events are networking opportunities; but successful Networkers know that not all events are networking events.
The holidays are upon us and with that comes many networking opportunities; chamber mixers, holiday dinner parties, family get togethers, formal New Year’s galas, and an endless array of new connections with delicious hors-d’oeuvres and festive beverages.
It takes a certain skill to honor the event and yet get the most out of connecting with others without looking boorish. My Father was a master at it.
Growing up in a family business did not teach me how to network. Joining a Networking organization like BNI showed me how families who are in business network.
My dad was a jeweler by trade. In fact, that was how he would always introduce himself no matter where he was; “I’m Stanley Bronner. Nice to meet you, I’m a jeweler by trade.” Smoooooooth. This would usually open up conversation in some way about their interest in a piece they once saw, something my mother was wearing, his custom cufflinks, etc.
Dad always smiled and thanked them. He’d then hand them a card, ask for theirs, then invite them for a cup of coffee at the shop or next door. He’d smile and turn the conversation back to them in a more social manner appropriate to the event.
Nicely done Dad!
Assignment:
Our assignment today begins with your mirror. All you have to do is practice your smile and handshake, exchanging cards and say “I’d love to follow-up with you in a few days” (and do!).
